Air Conditioning Insides
Directing the Air Movement
The components are relatively simple. They consist of the blower
their motors, and dampers or louvers to direct the air and to admit
outside air for ventilation. These dampers are mechanical, anti
shell linkages are easy to locate and repair when trouble occurs.
A run capacitor is often used with blower motors also, and is tested
just as the compressor run capacitor. If the capacitor fails, the
motor will hum and may even turn at a very low speed. Nobody should
be made to operate the fan motor in this condition.
A loud noise from the fan could be caused by worn or dry bearings
or by a loose blower wheel. Tightening a squirrel-cage blower may
inquire a long-arm setscrew wrench (such as Sears Craftsman 9046673).
You may not be able to see the setscrew itself. Look for a notch
in one of the blades on the side next to the motor an access opening
directly over the setscrew. The lubrication of dry bearings does
not eliminate bearing noise, you’ll have to remove the motor
and take it to a motor shop for bearing replacement. To lubricate,
look for a screw or a plastic plug on each of the motor's bell housings,
and lubricate with a light, high-quality or SAE 20 non-detergent
motor oil at the beginning of each season. Make sure to replace
the screws or plugs. Don't overlook the more obvious problems of
the air-movements the cooling fins and the air filter. A tremendous
volume of air moves through your air conditioner in a summer's operation.
Check the filter every two weeks, and replace it when it can't be
completely cleaned. Should the coils themselves become clogged,
use a commercial solvent such as Aqua-Sol or Calgon coil cleaner,
available from refrigeration-supply distributors.
Also available is a "fin comb" for straightening bent
or damaged cooling fins. Any condition that retards air flow can
cause the evaporator coil to frost over. This turn blocks air passages
and results in loss of cooling capacity.
Should the air condition bring water in the room area, check the
passage ways provided? Curry the Condensate away from the evaporator
to the sump al the Condenser Slinger ring.
To help your air conditioner cope with its summer load, start it
early in the morning on hot days before the house absorbs radiant
heat I win the sun. This allows it to keep up as the heat load builds
up. Treat the cool air upwards for more efficient circulation. Keep
curl s and other obstructions away from the air stream.
