GAS REFRIGERATORS
Most basic refrigerators today are compact models for apartments
and recreational vehicles. Those used in RVs often have a gas-absorption
system. In a gas refrigerator, it is very important that passageways
for fresh air flowing into and around the condenser he kept Free
from restrictions. The gas burner must also he free from lint and
dust. A
HOW A GAS-ABSORPTION REFRIGERATOR USES HEAT TO COOL
Therefore a gas refrigeration system leaves the factory, it's charged
with hydrogen gas, water, and ammonia. The flame of a gas burner
heats the mixture of ammonia and water present in the generator.
This moves up through the riser tube (very much like the water in
a coffee maker) time of the liquid turning to ammonia gas since
ammonia has a lower boiling than water.
The ice gas generated passes through a liquid mixture in the analyzer,
which it is enough to remove any water present. It now rises to
the refrigerator condenser, where it cools and condenses to liquid ammonia. The
liquid ammonia drains out of the refrigerator condenser and falls by gravity
to the refrigerator evaporator, where it meets with hydrogen gas. The hydrogen
causes the ammonia to evaporate very rapidly, and as it does it
absorbs heat. The hydrogen-ammonia gas leaves the refrigerator evaporator carrying
the heat which is absorbed, and flows downward since it is heavier
than the pure hydrogen entering the refrigerator evaporator. (The evaporator
is formed as a "tube within a tube. The absorber section, the
hydrogen-ammonia gas mixture is made through several "waterfalls"
created within the tubing by the water percolated from and flowing
back to the generator (only one waterfall is -.lawn here for simplicity).
The ammonia is absorbed by the water and the water liquid flows
back to the generator, where the cycle begins. Since the water already
contains all of the hydrogen that it can hold, the light gas is
free to return to the evaporator from the absorber. When the refrigerator thermostat
determines that the evaporator is cold enough, the burner flame
is reduced to a "holding" point which is sufficient to
maintain refrigerator evaporator temperatures. A malfunction within such a refrigerator
is no repairable. The refrigerator must be returned to the factory.
But the vast majority of refrigerator problems are outside the sealing problem,
so look closely before condemning the sealed refrigerator. Because of the
refrigerator evaporating principles, leveling of the refrigerator is critical. This is
a major cause of refrigerator failure, especially in recreational vehicles where
the gas absorption old operated valve placed on the refrigerator condenser. A
major disadvantage of early auto-defrosting systems was that when
heater warmed the refrigerator evaporator to melt the condensate, it also partly
thaws any frozen food within the refrigerator evaporator, especially if the food
was in direct contact with the refrigerator evaporator plate. A .that advance
to eliminate this condition was adoption of the evaporator system.
In this system the freezer evaporator is separated (and often insulated)
from the refrigerator compartment which contains "section"
of evaporator surface. Often two separate doors are weird, one for
each compartment. The refrigerant first enters the freezer evaporator,
and only after this evaporator is sufficiently cooled does the refrigerant
flow to the refrigerator compartment evaporator. If the freezer
section evaporator is often designed in a forward-opening shape
to cradle the frozen food. Or a horizontal, O-shaped evaporator
may completely encircle the food.
